Rainwater harvesting (RWH)

Rainwater harvesting (RWH) is the collection and storage of rain, rather than allowing it to run off. Rainwater is collected from a roof-like surface and redirected to a tank, cistern, deep pit (well, shaft, or borehole), aquifer, or a reservoir with percolation. Dew and fog can also be collected with nets or other tools. Rainwater harvesting differs from stormwater harvesting as the runoff is collected from roofs, rather than creeks, drains, roads, or any other land surfaces. Its uses include watering gardens, livestockirrigationdomestic use with proper treatment, and domestic heating.

Alternate Energy

In the energy sector, fossil fuel sources have been the main energy source due to their relatively low price. However, our energy demand is predicted to rise in the future, and we can no longer rely on finite and polluting energy sources. In the last decade, we have seen a positive shift towards expanding our renewable energy capacity, both on a local and global level.

Solar panels, wind turbines set on and offshore, and hydroelectricity are some of the alternative energy technologies that will supply our future energy needs. Our dependence on natural gas and oil is the biggest reason for environmental damage and in the energy sector alone, is responsible for a 1.7% increase of carbon dioxide gases in our atmosphere. Hereby, alternative energy sources will be a main focus to prevent further climate change effects on our planet.

Bio Gas Plant

Biogas is the mixture of gases produced by the breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen (anaerobically), primarily consisting of methane and carbon dioxide. Biogas can be produced from raw materials such as agricultural wastemanuremunicipal wasteplant materialsewagegreen waste or food waste. Biogas is a renewable energy source.

Ethics of Engineering & Code of ethics

Engineering ethics is the field of system of moral principles that apply to the practice of engineering. The field examines and sets the obligations by engineers to society, to their clients, and to the profession. As a scholarly discipline, it is closely related to subjects such as the philosophy of science, the philosophy of engineering, and the ethics of technology. Codes of ethics are largely similar across the various engineering societies and chartering authorities of the world, which further extend the code and publish specific guidance. Engineers shall hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of the public and shall strive to comply with the principles of sustainable development in the performance of their professional duties.

Code of ethics

  1. Engineers shall perform services only in areas of their competence.
  2. Engineers shall issue public statements only in an objective and truthful manner.
  3. Engineers shall act in professional matters for each employer or client as faithful agents or trustees, and shall avoid conflicts of interest
  4. Engineers shall build their professional reputation on the merit of their services and shall not compete unfairly with others.
  5. Engineers shall act in such a manner as to uphold and enhance the honor, integrity, and dignity of the engineering profession and shall act with zero-tolerance for bribery, fraud, and corruption
  6. Engineers shall continue their professional development throughout their careers, and shall provide opportunities for the professional development of those engineers under their supervision.
  7. Engineers shall, in all matters related to their profession, treat all persons fairly and encourage equitable participation without regard to gender or gender identity, race, national origin, ethnicity, religion, age, sexual orientation, disability, political affiliation, or family, marital, or economic status.
